PROJECT BRIEF
For this partner project, the objective was to create a packaging system which could serve the purpose of being both a gift box for a product as well as turning into an additional activity. The goal was to create something that reduced consumer waste, and encouraged users not to immediately discard the packaging. The outer packaging should not include any elements that go to waste, and it should aim to be as low-cost as possible.
SOLUTION
The main component of our final concept is a wooden box, which serves as both the outer packaging and also can be taken apart and rebuilt into a birdhouse. Once in its birdhouse arrangement, a paint-by-number design is displayed on the outside, and can be painted as an activity to reveal to a simple nature scene. Included inside the box is a brochure with instructions, numbered paint containers, paint brushes, a bird feeder attachment, a roll of twine, and bird seed in a bag hand-embroidered by Sara. The box is made of a thin, light wood, and is about 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm. In the branding, I used pastel colors often associated with children's products. I also created characters that could be recognizable and found in each of the different products.
